SMC was one of the first wholesale accounts that American Alpine Institute had for supplying its guides and clients with gear when AAI began guiding and teaching in 1975. SMC played a major role in helping the Institute teach state of the art ice climbing and mountaineering back when there were few U.S. manufacturers of hardware in the business. Until that time, Germany, France, and Italy had been the only sources of good technical gear. But by 1975, SMC products equaled or excelled their European counterparts in a number of areas, particularly in snow and ice climbing protection. I don’t know if it was “know how” on the part of some individual SMC engineers or simply a manifestation of broader spirit of innovation in the company, but the improvements were significant. AAI has always taught state of the art climbing technique, and through the years, we immediately incorporated SMC innovations as they emerged.
